Facebook

In my quest to determine the nature of blogs and facebook I found one of those useless bits of information - about Facebook. This appeared in the New York Observer of 1 October this year. A study in the UK reveals that facebook is costly for business and the cost to firms for facebooking during working hours is estimated at over US$260 million per day. One firm tried to ban facebook but changed their minds in the face of an employee revolt. Lawyers in the USA are apparently particularly enamoured with facebook; helps them vent their daily frustrations!

Hi Rose, I wonder about these massive numbers which are stated in an attempt to quantify the cost of Facebook.... I suspect that much of the time spent on Facebook is simply a reallocation of time that employees spent in recreational and personal activities before Facebook existed .... What do you think?

Rose,
At wits Facebook is blocked by our Network service, and I quote from our site:
"ACCESS DENIED
Due to high bandwidth usage and the requirement to prioritise bandwidth for "teaching & learning" and administrative purposes, some file types normally not associated with the business of the university have been restricted to after hours (17:00hrs to 07:00hrs)."
Please note the use of the word "normally". I would be interesting to know what percentage of Facebook users really apply it for teachning , learning or research.

Maryna

At Rhodes too we have dire warnings about using up our quota by accessing Facebook. At this stage I would not even bother to use it to interface with students.

Why can't this country DO something about bandwidth costs?

Bye

Yes, numbers are pretty meaningless really, just look scary and I agree that its jsut another reallocation of rec time. When I look at what's on colleagues' screens during working hours that open up from email and internet searches, facebook probably pales in comparison. Our varsity also restricts access to Facebook. Well, this afternoon is our turn for power shedding for 2 hours so we might get some non e work done, the real stuff!! I have been printing out articles to read during this time for our research project - the topic has changed various times! Talk about recreational time at work - as soon as our scanner works (????grrrr)I want to send you a cartoon from Women's Review of Books about blogging called "A cautionary tale" - what might happen should we all get bitten by the blogging bug
