A bird's-eye view on research 1
Our formal program started on Monday 12 April. Prof Wieland Gevers (ASSAf) gave us a perspective on the role of peer-reviewers and editors. I now know that I can re-submit an article as many times needed if I really want to publish in a specific journal - the peer-review process is all part of learning; embargoes of 50 years are ridiculous (1 year is acceptable) and it should be cleared with our IP Office.
Delegates from previous academies shared their learning and experiences during their visits in the USA - all sounded as if everything in the US is bigger and better, and money is not a problem ...
Prof Eugene Cloete (Stellenbosch, Dean: Faculty of Science) demonstrated with what they are busy - e-learning is huge, and from next year on each first year student studying with this faculty will be issued with 'n laptop and e-learning material. The whole campus will also be wireless soon - things we as librarians should keep in mind. Students and researchers want access to information any time, any place, and they also want support when needed (just in time). He is also very much in favour of open access! Can't wait to get back and put his research material on SUNScholar! :)
Prof Candy Lang (UCT, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering) explained the fascinating world of nanotechnology, and Prof Howard Reader (Stellenbosch, Dept. of Electronic and Electromagnetics Engineering) gave a most interesting talk on telescopes and the work they do (SKA Project). Prof Reader also referred to the theory: "Could electronics be what's causing runaway cars?"
In summary: I became so much more aware of the importance of our roles as librarians in making the life of a researcher easier, providing seamless access to information any time, day or night. This way we can also contribute to them conducting research of very high international recognised standards, which can in turn change and improve the conditions out there.
We ended the day by having group discussions on 3 articles we had to read in preparation for the workshop - a very stimulating experience.
A thought provoking day indeed!
